Kayl-Tétange, Land of History and Tradition

Do you like hilly landscapes? Then you may well fall in love with this municipality in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. The villages of Kayl and Tétange have retained their rural character in a forest setting, without losing the vestiges of a rich industrial past. A typical town with a valuable heritage

While many towns around the capital have bet on a cosmopolitan demographic growth, Kayl and Tétange have assumed their destiny as transmitters of memory. Mining has given way to service companies. Passenger cars have replaced the “minette” (Lorraine iron ore) wagons. However, the Musée Ferrum, recently inaugurated, will fascinate all history lovers. To be visited, of course, in addition to the nearby Musée National des Mines de fer  in Rumelange.

 

Remnants of the past in the service of everyday life

◦ The SchungFabrik, a former shoe factory, now houses the cultural centre, which has kept the same name.

◦ The Moulin Banal in Kayl now hosts the rehearsal rooms of the Sainte-Cécile wind band and the fire station.

◦ The station of Kayl, put into service in 1860, accommodates today the tourist office and various associations, as it is the case at the station of Tétange, built in 1881.

◦ The schools built in 1888 and 1914 are now the seat of the municipal administration.

 

If walking through the streets of the municipality takes you back in time, on the side of the old mining sites, the fauna and flora are currently appropriating the territory with a remarkable diversity. Renatured in 1970, the Kayl stream has seen its flow increase and its banks regain the natural vegetation typical of wetlands.

 

A dynamic population attached to their roots

Although located less than ten kilometres from the French border, the municipality still has a high proportion of Luxembourg population. Nevertheless, the creation of new infrastructures and housing areas in 2008 has permitted the arrival of 2,000 new inhabitants over the last ten years. And that's not all: there are still new opportunities to be seized!

This is a godsend for working parents: schoolchildren are looked after from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., and from 7 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. during the holidays. Please note: some facilities offer longer opening hours, such as the Kiddy Steps centre, which is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

If you want to leave your car in the garage and take advantage of free public transport, Luxembourg City is only half an hour away by train from Tétange or Kayl station. To get around, two bus networks - transport intercommunal and RGTR - provide connections. For example:
