The history of Luxembourg's most popular thermal baths

As is so often the case with the Luxembourg towns, their story revolves around a past rooted in the history of the Roman conquest. But most surprisingly, in this small village of the Abbey of Echternach, which later would be called Mondorf, then Mondorf-les-Bains, one can also observe traces of the passage of the Celts.

Due to its geographical position, it has been the object of numerous attacks. Ideally located between France and Germany, Mondorf was a strategic place to penetrate the enemy lines.

The international influence of a thermal centre nestled in the heart of the Grand Duchy

Today, the strength of this municipality of the south-east is obviously its high-quality thermal baths.

In 1840, the town experienced a turning point in its history. It was at this precise moment that the genesis of what was to become one of the largest thermal centres in Luxembourg began. The first thermal springs in the region were discovered underground. They flow from a water reserve naturally enriched in minerals due to significant volcanic or geothermal (energy from the earth) activity.

The Société des Bains de Mondorf was then created to exploit this natural resource. Seven years later, a spa dedicated to this activity was built, with the arrival of the first French clients, who came to enjoy the healing power of Luxembourg’s thermal water.

The Catholic past of the municipality is reflected in the Kirche Mondorf-les-Bains, which immerses visitors in a religious world and an exceptional architectural setting.
