The history of the Luxembourg town of Troisvierges

Troisvierges has a rich history. The first traces of the past date back to Roman times.

While the conquest of Gaul was raging, particularly in the Ardennes forest, the town, which did not bear the name it bears today, benefited from the construction of major roads that crossed Europe from one end to the other. It was on these same roads that the very first populations settled in this region, located in the north of the Grand Duchy.

To live in Troisvierges is to immerse oneself in an age-old history, in a town that has preserved several buildings from the time of the Roman conquest and Christianity.

The name Troisvierges, or Ulvelingen as it is known in German, first appeared in the 14th century, but it was not until 1909 that it became official. Both names are still used today.

A border area

The proximity of Germany and France gave birth over the centuries to a double culture, which is the strength of the town of Troisvierges, located in the canton of Clervaux.

In 1866, a railway line transformed the daily life of the inhabitants, who were then able to reach the capital of Luxembourg by direct line. The opening up of the region gave a boost to the commercial sector, attracting families who were prone to settle there. In 1900, the number of inhabitants in Troisvierges had increased to 2,597, more than doubling in barely a century.

Troisvierges is one of the 102 municipalities of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In 2020, there were no less than 3,300 inhabitants for an area of 37.86 km2.
